We’re back with another Say Watt for your reading pleasure. We’ve had a couple of birthdays in the Meridian asset family. Te Uku wind farm just hit double digits with the turbines spinning for 10 years and in 2020, Manapōuri Power Station turned 50! Both are milestones and we’re pretty excited to tell you all about how we’ve been celebrating.
We all know how much EV’s get our engines revving at Meridian and now we are proud to let you know that our fleet vehicles have gone 100% electric. Also, we’ve got a story from one of our Wind Turbine Technicians, who recently spent his workdays up turbines down in Antarctica. And, we’re sharing some stories about our asset communities, as well as the usual updates from our partners at KidsCan and the Kākāpō Recovery Programme.
Grab yourself a cuppa, a choccy biscuit and get cosy. It’s a good time of year to settle in and have a read.
Manapōuri Power Station celebrates 50 years!
We’ve just celebrated a milestone birthday in the Meridian family. Our Manapōuri Power Station turned the big five-oh last year, and while some people might want to keep this number quiet, we certainly don’t. We’re very proud of Manapōuri – it’s the jewel in our hydro crown! Due to COVID-19, we weren’t able to celebrate last year so, we threw it a big fat birthday celebration this year instead.
Most of you will know about Manapōuri Power Station. But, since it’s kind of a big deal, we thought we’d do a bit of a humblebrag and tell you a bit about the power station, its history and how we celebrated this amazing milestone.
Taking hydraulic hoses to New Zealand’s playgrounds
There’s nothing like a good news story. This one comes from Mark, our Inventory Specialist at our West Wind Farm in Mākara, Wellington.
We’re proud of our wind turbines. And we’re not shy to tell you how impressive we think they are. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to see one in real-life, you’ll know what we mean. They’re big pieces of kit and to keep them spinning, they require a lot of tender love and care. Our wind turbine technicians, engineers and specialists work hard to keep them in tip top shape. As you can imagine, they require fair few parts, all of which unfortunately have a shelf life.
Carbon emissions are out, and decarbonisation is in.
You may have seen that recently the Climate Change Commission (CCC) released its draft advice to our Government with its recommendations for tackling climate change. Turns out, that if we keep doing what we’re doing, New Zealand isn’t going to meet its targets under the Carbon Zero Act.
It’s a stark reality we’re facing. So, this is where the CCC’s draft recommendations come in. In a nutshell, Aotearoa must move into recovery mode and do some hardcore carbon cutting. Thankfully, the Government seem to be feeling pretty good about this – indicating that not only are they taking on the challenge, but based on the CCC’s advice, they can also see an achievable and affordable pathway forward.
